County wins national awards for public information and outreach

Vancouver, WA – More than 450 entries from around the country were considered for awards in the 2009 National Awards of Excellence Competition sponsored by the National Association of County Information Officers. Clark County received three of the highest awards and recognition in two other categories.

The county won a best of class and two superior (first place) awards in the NACIO Special Projects category, an excellence (second place) award in Graphic Design and a meritorious (third place) award in Internal Publications.

Best of class and superior awards went to the county’s Sammy Awards program, which recognizes individuals, groups, organizations or projects for outstanding contributions to salmon recovery in Clark County. In 2008 the Sammy Awards were updated with a sculpture for award winners crafted from recycled band saws, promotional materials, Web site and interactive online registration form. The annual awards are sponsored and presented by the county’s Endangered Species program with assistance from the Public Information and Outreach Office.

Work on the annual Clark County Recycled Arts Festival earned a second superior award. Public information staff developed street banners, post cards, posters, ads, and a Web page for the event sponsored by the county’s Solid Waste program in partnership with Waste Connections. The festival aims for a lively approach to encouraging waste reduction, reuse and recycling.

Also honored was a sustainability display created for the Clark County Fair last summer and Community Central, an online newsletter for the Clark County Center for Community Health.

NACIO is the communications wing of the National Association of Counties (NACo). Professionals working in fields such as communications, graphics, video production, and public relations selected the 2009 award winners.
