Public Health Week encourages exploration of local food system

Vancouver, WA— Next time you reach for a snack, try some fruits and vegetables grown right here in Clark County. You’ll find them at farmers markets, CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture), food stands, and some grocery stores.

That’s one of the messages in a Clark County Board of Health proclamation issued in observance of National Public Health Week, April 6 through 12. The proclamation encourages citizens to learn more about local food and improve access to healthy food by supporting local farmers.

“Access to healthy food is a foundation of a healthy community,” said Tricia Mortell, program manager for nutrition and family wellness. “There are plenty of good reasons to buy local food. For starters, you’ll enjoy great tasting fresh food. And by supporting local farming, you’re also preserving local farmland, supporting the local economy, and helping the environment by reducing the miles food has to travel.”

Another way to enjoy fresh food (and save money) is to grow your own. On Wednesday, April 8, Public Health employee Tricia Pace will discuss the “Square Foot Gardening” method for achieving a thriving garden with less space, watering and effort. The presentation is open to the public and takes place from noon to 1 p.m. in Conference Rooms 210A and B at the Center for Community Health, 1601 E. Fourth Plain Blvd., Vancouver.
