Steve Webb, superintendent of Vancouver Public Schools, invites you to attend a patron tour on Friday, Oct. 10. The tour will begin at the Center for Educational Leadership, 2921 Falk Road, at 8:30 AM. After an overview by Dr. Webb, you will board school buses to Fruit Valley Community Learning Center and Washington Elementary School, where you will see firsthand how teaching and learning are being supported by community partnerships. Upon returning to the Center for Educational Leadership, you will enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by Culinary Arts students. The tour will conclude at 1 PM.
The patron tour is free, and lunch is $4. To register, please contact Susan Knable at (360) 313-4720, or email susan.knable@vansd.org. You also may register online at the district's website. Go to www.vansd.org, click on Special Events and Projects, and select Patron Tours.
Fruit Valley and Washington are part of Vancouver Public Schools' long-range plan to establish family-community resource centers in schools impacted by poverty and other barriers to learning. At Fruit Valley, dozens of partnerships with public agencies, not-for-profit groups, faith-based organizations, local businesses and the neighborhood association have helped to revitalize the surrounding community. Services provided at the school site include child care, pre-kindergarten education, before and after school programs, mental health counseling, parenting assistance, employment assistance, access to computer technology, the Lunch Buddy program, basic needs items such as clothing and food, and more. Collaborative efforts to develop a similar resource center at Washington Elementary began last spring with the support of the Vancouver School District Foundation, the City of Vancouver's Community Development Block Grant program, LSW Architects, and other partners.

The October 10th VSD Superintendent's Patron Tour was fabulous. I saw progressive teaching techniques, engaged kids, and attractive facilities. When is the next tour?
